Alton Memorial Hospital

Since 1937, the staff and physicians of Alton Memorial Hospital have provided high-quality, compassionate healthcare services for the people of the River Bend. Through its charitable mission, the hospital works on many fronts to improve the health of the people and communities it serves.

Today, the hospital has grown to a 222-bed, full-service regional medical center that serves patients from a five-county area. It has nearly 900 staff members and is one of the largest employers in the City of Alton. Alton Memorial Hospital is recognized as the local leader in heart care, emergency services, digestive health, sports medicine and more. And the hospital takes great pride in providing the area's most modern medical facility equipped with the latest medical and safety technology.

Alton Memorial operates the area's largest and busiest emergency department, as well as Alton's only hospital-based advanced life support ambulance service. In 2005, the hospital introduced FastER, an urgent care service that treats patients with minor injuries and illnesses - usually in about an hour. FastER, which operates from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, has helped reduced wait times significantly and improved the patient experience.

Alton Memorial Hospital offers some of the most advanced and sophisticated forms of cancer treatment through its state-of-the-art Cancer Care Center. The Cancer Care Center was the first facility in Madison County to offer intensity-modulated radiation therapy and image guided radiotherapy. The hospital also offers a full range of surgical and infusion therapy cancer treatment options. A Cancer Information Center located in the Cancer Care Center offers patients and their loved ones the opportunity to research the latest cancer treatments in comfortable, private setting.

Alton Memorial Hospital is also the leading provider of heart care in the River Bend, offering advanced diagnostic services and treatments such as coronary angioplasty, stent placement, cardiac defibrillator implants and more. In 2006, the hospital opened a second cardiovascular lab to meet growing demand for advanced heart care services.

Comprehensive orthopedic, rehabilitation and sports medicine services are available through the hospital's Human Motion Institute. Human Motion Institute outpatient rehabilitation centers are located in Alton and Glen Carbon. Certified athletic trainers from the hospital provide coverage and care at many area high school and college athletic competitions. Physicians and surgeons on the hospital's medical staff perform advanced surgical and pain management procedures to help patients regain mobility and quality of life.

Alton Memorial Hospital provides a wide range of other services, including the Surgery Center, Family Birth Center, Sleep Disorders Center, Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, Diabetes Management Center, Memory Disorders Center, Twin Rivers MRI Center, PET CT imaging and the Home Care Pharmacy. Eunice Smith Home, a 64-bed, long-term care facility on the hospital campus, serves the needs of older adults. The facility also houses Memory Lane, a unique residence center that meets the special needs of people with Alzheimer's disease.

A free physician referral service connects residents to doctors on the hospital's medical staff. The public can call 1-800-392-0936 or visit the hospital's Web site. The hospital's medical staff comprises more than 200 skilled physicians and surgeons working in more than 30 specialties.

As part of its mission, Alton Memorial Hospital offers a variety of educational programs and screenings to keep the community healthy. Health fairs, wellness classes and presentations provide helpful information and services for all members of the family.

Quality care and patient safety are of the utmost importance to Alton Memorial Hospital staff and physicians. The hospital was among the first hospitals in the St. Louis area to introduce bar-coding technology that has been shown to improve accuracy in the administration of medications to hospital patients. Alton Memorial also consistently earns high rankings for adhering to evidence-based medical standards that have been shown to reduce infections and improve care for those with heart disease and pneumonia.

Alton Memorial Hospital is now preparing for the future of healthcare in the River Bend. Plans are under way for a 78,000-square-foot building that will feature 76 private patient rooms. Private rooms will enhance patient comfort, help reduce infection risk and improve patient safety. The new facility should open by 2009 and will replace the hospital's historic Smith Wing, which has housed patients since the hospital's opening.

As a member of BJC HealthCare, Alton Memorial Hospital offers a direct link to the world-renowned resources of other BJC facilities, including Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis and St. Louis Children's Hospital.
